Let’s blow the whistle on blood cancers. |

Hustle for a cure held the Skate with Your Heroes Event in Montréal recently. Before the event kicked off, the fun began in the foyer where kids had a blast playing in a jump castle while their parents had the opportunity to bid on some great hockey memorabilia and items at the silent auction tables. The event officially began with Angelo D’Amico (former NHL official and son of the late John D’Amico) and Dave Jackson (current NHL official) being honoured for their involvement in the program and continuous support of the fight against blood cancers. Also honoured was Luca, a 10-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) in March 2008 and has been undergoing treatment since. Luca, a big Montreal Canadiens fan, is now in maintenance therapy which means he can start playing hockey again. Upon completion of the opening ceremonies, the lights in the arena dimmed and the large group of excited kids hit the ice with flashlights, skating around like fireflies, creating a magical moment. The lights gradually faded back up and the fun continued. A clown entertained everyone by making balloon sculptures. There was face painting. And of course, there were lots of former NHL greats to mingle with, including Carol Vadnais, Peter Della Riva, Dave Jackson, Phil Goyette, Wally Weir and Jacques Demers. The Skate with Your Heroes Event in Montréal was a great success with smiles on the faces of young and old alike. Everyone involved is looking forward to another great time next year.
